The concept of establishing a budget from the initial design phase - that is held sacred throughout the design AND the build process may be totally unheard of in a renovation - but the idea of getting straight answers to straight questions seems to be an even more unusual offering in a renovation.

That's our only policy.
If we don't think the initial budgets that a client is thinking is in tune with reality - we will absolutely tell them - even at the risk of losing them as a client. We will never "yes them", never answer them with anything less than the truth.
And believe it or not, if a client comes to us with a budget that is WAY above reality, way more than is necessary - we will tell them that too. We have done that on more occasions that I can count!
This approach begins in the "Cradle" of a project.
